I really wanted to do a interview with Jessi Jae Joplin because her style is out of this world. I asked her over Facebook and right away she wrote back yes! She is super nice too and that makes her extra cool !
How did you get into being a Fashion stylist and being in a band? I got into fashion styling and singing as a career when I moved to Los Angeles. I was immediately determined to make a living out of what I loved to do – instead of it just being a hobby. So far, so good :)
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? When I was a silly little kid I used to always say that I wanted to be in the circus. I think it was because I loved performing and it looked like so much fun to dress up and entertain people. That’s not too far off from what I do now.
What was your life like growing up? I grew up in the suburbs of Northern California. I was in heavily involved in musical theater, was a cheerleader, played tennis and the piano. I was a pretty outgoing child and spent a great deal of time having sleepovers – crafting and making up dances and skits with my friends. I love the town I grew up in – I’m blessed to have had a great education and access to lots of culture, but I always knew that there was something more for me out there. I knew I belonged in a big city like New York or Los Angeles!
If you could learn one random skill, what would you learn? If I could learn one random skill I would probably learn how to play the guitar. I’ve tried several times, but it never stuck...It’s definitely something I’ve always wanted to be able to do – especially as a singer. I guess it’s never too late to learn :)
How many emails do you get each week? I receive way too many emails each week to count! I’m not really a “phone person,” so email is pretty much my primary form of communicating with people. Plus, on top of work and personal emails, I also subscribe to all of my favorite fashion brands and editorials – just to keep up to date on new stock and sales!
What did you do on your 16th birthday? I got my drivers license...the rest is history!
If you could learn how speak with an interesting accent what would it be? I would have a British accent, for sure!
When was the last time you did something for the first time? I was recently cast as the lead in the indie rock musical O-Star. This was probably the last time I did something for the first time because even though I’ve been a singer and performer for quite a while, it was the first time I’d ever filmed a movie. I also did a great deal of acting in the film which was very new for me as well. The whole experience was such a blast and I definitely want to do more of those kinds of projects!
If someone asked you to give them a random piece of advice, what would you say? Iwould say “Carpe Diem” ...seize the day. I feel like a lot of people live their lives planning for the future – and as a result, fail to appreciate and celebrate what they have in the present. I believe it’s important to have gratitude for the things you have in your life – big or small...and enjoy the present day.
Hate or Love ?????
Ripped Jeans? Love, but only if they are naturally ripped from wearing them way too much. It’s sometimes awkward when brands pre-rip them for you.
Side Ponytails? Cool on other gals, but I can’t seem to pull that look off.
white jumpsuits? I’ll take it.
Floral prints? LOVE!! Especially when you grunge it up with a pair of Doc Martens and a leather jacket.
Designer clothing? It’s all the same to me.
Bright colors? The more the merrier.
Round sunglasses? Love! Very John Lennon :)
Plaid? Sure!
stripes? Why not :)
sweat bands? No thanks!
Crocs? No way! Unflattering...and they aren’t even comfortable, wtf?
